How does this compare to free and cheap website builders like Wix?
Wix, SquareSpace, Weebly and others offer generic starter sites, perfect for certain situations but limited, lacking any specialist features.
FILLIP offers composer-specific functionality, a tailored design, expert knowledge, and crucial post-launch personal support in the form of coaching.
What makes you qualified to offer this service?
I (Tim) have been in the web design business for 20 years – and classical music my whole life. I and my team built John Rutter’s website in 2018.
I’ve conducted the specialist contemporary music ensemble Epiphoni Consort for ten years and understand the challenges facing composers today. In particular I know that a website without expert help is about as much use as a car with no wheels. Hence we’re called ‘fillip’ (something which acts as a springboard or a boost to activity) – our goal is to get you moving.
Digital marketing – and all marketing – is a skill everyone needs training in. Especially so if what they are trying to market is themselves.
So what’s the coaching bit about?
A coaching conversation is one that helps you work towards your goals or explore a challenge.
You get around an hour a month with Tim in the first year after your site launch – you can use the hour how you like. To discuss composing challenges, other work or life challenges, or to explore together how you might better market and promote your music.
Coaching sessions can take place in person or over video call.
Find out more about my coaching on my personal website.
Who’s behind all this?
Tim Reader (coach, and web guy), Robb Green (the pretty pictures), Jake McMurchie (the WordPress theme), Ian Carpenter (inaugural client, advisor on composer requirements, and excellent human).
Seems very reasonably priced for all that. Is there a catch?
For 2025 we’re offering competitive pricing to get the party started. Tim needs to build coaching hours as part of his training and qualification. It’s a mutual back-scratch!
Provided you’ve started in 2025 the prices quoted will be honoured for the full term of the relationship (2 years).
For me this is pricey – can it be less?
Depending on what stage of your journey you are, and your current needs, the pricing may not feel so reasonable and indeed be a bit steep. Over time we hope to somehow means-test this such that the very established and doing-rather-well-thank-you pay a bit more than the recent graduate just setting up her career.
The whole spirit of this thing is collaboration so if you have any ideas, we welcome them!
How much is the suppplement for including the function to sell physical scores?
Fillip for Composers is primarily targeted to composers who want to sell digital scores online.
The service we use – Easy Digital Downloads – can be extended to handle physical sales (with very simple shipping) – but the add-on is £300pa.
As yet this is not in use (due to no demand). The first time this is requested we propose introducing a supplement of a % of that licence cost (to be agreed by discussion). By the time of the renewal, likely we’ll have more customers using it and can absorb the renewal cost each year.
Do you offer this service with a fully bespoke design?
Yes we can offer this – it’s our bread and butter really. The pricing is quite different that way so get in contact and we’ll pick up that conversation.
I want the website but not the coaching – do you offer that?
Yes, please get in touch anyway. The Fillip venture has been conceived as a vehicle to launch my coaching practice and as such the pricing is significantly discounted (relative to the sophistication of the product) so if you’d like the website minus the coaching please get in touch and we’ll discuss your and my requirements.
Got some live sites to see yet?
- John Rutter Our flagship composer website for a flagship composer. This is an example of a bespoke build
- Ian Carpenter This is our first FILLIP website using the Standard theme .
- Ben Ponniah This is the first of our sites using the more design-led ‘Cinematic’ theme.
And many more in progress.
All themes are customisable according to your preferences (e.g. in type face and colour scheme). Of course your catalogue and the artwork of any recordings you are on will be what really gives it a unique character.
